He also performs with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, New York Philharmonic and Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, among many others. John has toured Japan many times with various ensembles, most recently with Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and Nobuyki Tsujii in the winter of 2014.

His arrangements for brass have been performed and recorded by the MET Opera Brass, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Brass, New York Symphonic Brass, Meridian Arts Ensemble and the Atlantic Brass Quintet.

On April 15, 2003, The New York Times reviewed the Metropolitan Opera Brass concert at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine with praise, saying "Mr. Sheppard's arrangements skillfully wove ever-changing textures with one group of players while allowing individual soloists to stand out. A selection of opera scenes, which the ensemble previously recorded, showed off the multifaceted colors that brass instruments can produce, including velvet-soft horns and lyrical trombones... Thanks to the admirable clarity of Mr. Sheppard's conducting — himself a trumpeter — entrances were always precise and harmonies perfectly voiced."

John attended California State University, Northridge where he was a student of John Clyman, Roy Poper and Mario Guarneri. He also attended the Manhattan School of Music where he studied with Mel Broiles and William Vacchiano.
